The Foundation has two distinct grant programs, awarding Board Grants and discretionary President’s Grants.

About Board Grants
Board grants are generally one to three years in duration. Board grants are selected three times each year at our board meetings.

How to Apply:
Board grant applications begin with the submission of a Letter of Inquiry. Letters of Inquiry are accepted at any time.

All Letters of Inquiry must be completed and submitted online.

All Letters of Inquiry must include:

  • Names and qualifications of those who would carry out the project
  • Brief description of the project goals and design, and how it fits within your organization
  • Estimated project budget

Letters of Inquiry are evaluated on these key dimensions:

  • Relevance to our priorities;
  • Importance and originality;
  • Significance and generalizability; and
  • Sustainability.

Within two months of submission, you will receive one of the following: a request for more information, a request to submit a full proposal, or a notice informing you that your project will not be supported.

Requests to Submit a Full Proposal
If, based on your letter of inquiry, the foundation staff decides that your project is a strong candidate for funding and is interested in learning more, you will be invited to submit a full proposal.

All Invited Proposals must be completed and submitted online.

All proposals must include:

  • Names and qualifications of those who would carry out the project
  • Brief description of the project goals and design, and how it fits within your organization
  • Explanation of scalable or replicable aspects of your project
  • Description of expected outcomes, how you will measure outcomes and your plans to disseminate outcomes
  • Principal Investigator(s) CV
  • Line-item budget that includes:
    • Personnel—salary and fringe benefits
    • Other Direct Costs—office operations, communication, travel, meeting expenses, etc.
    • Purchases Services—consultant and/or contract costs.
    • Indirect Costs—administrative expenses related to overall operations. Note: The Foundation’s approved rate for indirect costs is 10%.
  • Description of other anticipated funding support
  • Once the full proposal is submitted, it will be reviewed by the Foundation staff. Promising proposals will be submitted for review by the Foundation’s Board of Directors, who will ultimately determine whether the project is funded.

    Please note: The process from Letter of Inquiry to Board approval can take up to a year.
